Frequently asked questions

Do I need a lawyer to go to court?

Not always. In some courts you can represent yourself, but legal advice can help you decide whether to proceed, prepare your case and understand the risks.

What is the difference between mediation and going to court?

In mediation, a neutral person helps the parties reach their own agreement. In court, a judge decides. Mediation is generally private, less formal and often faster.

Can a dispute be resolved without going to court?

Many can be, through negotiation or mediation. We tell you whether that looks suitable in your situation.

Are there time limits for starting a claim?

Yes. Strict time limits generally apply to civil claims, and missing one can end your right to sue, so please seek advice as early as you can. In some cases there are exceptions, and we can review whether your matter may fall under one. Depending on your situation, there may also be strategic reasons to still proceed to court.

How long does a civil dispute take?

It depends on the issue, the other side and the court’s schedule. Negotiation and mediation are generally quicker than a court case. We give you a realistic picture at your appointment.

Can I get legal advice if I’m representing myself?

Yes. If you are handling your matter yourself, you can book an appointment for legal coaching. We explain the process in plain language, help you understand your rights and options, review your documents and discuss how to prepare. You stay in charge of your matter and you go into court or resolution with a clearer idea of what to expect. You can use as much or as little support as you need.

Can you act as both my lawyer and the mediator?

No. In any one matter, we act either as your lawyer or as the neutral mediator, never both, and we explain the difference before you decide how to proceed.

How much does it cost?

Fees depend on the nature and complexity of the work. We explain the fees and scope of services before you decide to proceed, and a complimentary 15-minute discovery call lets us briefly discuss your matter first.
